The excavated foundations of the Elizabethan playhouse survive below modern ground level, preserved in situ beneath an office building on Park Street, with only fragmentary structural remains visible rather than any standing theater fabric. The site is managed by the Rose Theatre Trust. Public access is limited to scheduled guided viewings of the exposed remains.
About Rose Theatre Site, Southwark, London
Philip Henslowe and John Cholmley built the Rose Theatre in 1587 on Bankside in Southwark as a public Elizabethan playhouse. It staged early plays by Christopher Marlowe and possibly a young William Shakespeare before the nearby Globe eclipsed it. Its 1989 excavation revealed the layout of an Elizabethan playhouse and reshaped scholarship on stagecraft.
