HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Romney Manor & Wingfield Estate.

The site preserves the ruined walls and foundations of a former sugar plantation great house and mill, set within grounds dominated by a centuries old saman tree, with the historic structures surviving as partial ruins rather than an intact estate. It is privately operated, currently housing a batik workshop and gardens open to visitors. Access to the grounds is on a ticketed, general admission basis.

About Romney Manor & Wingfield Estate

English colonists established Romney Manor as a sugar plantation on Saint Kitts in the seventeenth century, part of the island's early Caribbean sugar economy. The estate was long associated with the family of Samuel Jefferson, an ancestor of the American president Thomas Jefferson. Enslaved African labor worked its cane fields for generations under successive planter owners.
