About Roman Walls of Astorga (Asturica Augusta), León province

Asturica Augusta was founded by Rome in the first century BCE as an administrative and military center for the gold-mining region of northwestern Hispania. Its defensive walls, rebuilt in the third century, protected the city amid growing instability in the late Roman Empire. Astorga became an early bishopric and a key stop on pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.
