HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Villas of Stabiae, Castellammare di Stabia.
The site preserves excavated Roman villa complexes, including mosaic floors, painted wall fragments, peristyle courtyards, and bath structures from luxury seaside residences buried by the eruption of Vesuvius, presented as original ruins with some conservation shelters added. It is managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture through the archaeological park authority covering the Vesuvian sites. The villas are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Roman Villas of Stabiae, Castellammare di Stabia
Wealthy Romans built seaside villas at Stabiae, near the Bay of Naples, from the first century BCE as country retreats away from Rome. Villas such as Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna featured elaborate frescoes, gardens, and bath complexes reflecting elite Roman taste. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE buried the settlement along with Pompeii.
