HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Road & Inscriptions, Nahr el-Kalb (Dog River).
The site preserves a stretch of ancient roadway and a series of rock cut stelae and inscriptions left by successive conquerors from Egyptian, Assyrian, and Roman times through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, carved directly into the limestone cliff face beside the river mouth. It is protected as an archaeological and historic site under Lebanon's Directorate General of Antiquities. The inscriptions stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.

Egyptian, Assyrian, and Roman forces used the coastal pass at Nahr el-Kalb as a strategic route between Egypt and Mesopotamia. Passing rulers, beginning with Pharaoh Ramesses II, carved commemorative inscriptions into the cliffside to mark their campaigns. Romans built a road and bridge there, continuing a tradition of inscribed monuments that later conquerors followed.
