HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Odeon of Patras.
The odeon preserves its semicircular tiered seating cut partly into the hillside and portions of its stage building, with sections of the upper seating and other elements restored during twentieth-century conservation work rather than surviving as entirely original Roman fabric. It is protected under the Greek Ministry of Culture and administered by the local ephorate of antiquities. The monument is open to visitors, generally on a ticketed basis.
About Roman Odeon of Patras
Roman builders constructed the odeon at Patras in the first century CE as a covered theater for musical and rhetorical performances, predating the larger Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. It served the city's Roman colonists and Greek residents as a venue for public entertainment and civic gatherings. The building reflected Patras's status as a Roman colony.
