Chester retains one of the most complete circuits of city walls in Britain, combining Roman foundations with substantial medieval and later rebuilding, including towers such as King Charles' Tower and the Eastgate with its later clock. The walls are maintained by Cheshire West and Chester Council. They form a public walkway around the city center that is freely accessible at all times.
About Roman City Walls, Chester, Cheshire
The city walls of Chester originated as the defenses of the Roman legionary fortress of Deva Victrix, established by the Twentieth Legion in the late first century. The walls enclosed the fortress and the Roman town that grew around it, guarding a crossing of the River Dee. They were extended and rebuilt in the medieval period as its defensive circuit.
