HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Baths & Cardo Maximus, Beirut.
The site preserves excavated remains of Roman era public baths and a stretch of the colonnaded cardo maximus, with column bases, pavement, and portions of the bath's hypocaust visible amid the surrounding modern city center. It is managed by Lebanon's Directorate General of Antiquities. The ruins lie in open ground downtown and are freely accessible to the public.
About Roman Baths & Cardo Maximus, Beirut
Roman Berytus, refounded as a colony under Augustus in the late first century BCE, built a monumental bath complex and a colonnaded cardo maximus at its civic center. The city later became renowned for its law school, one of the Roman empire's foremost centers of legal education. Its baths and streets served the public life of the city for centuries.
