HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Arena of Arles.

The arena preserves most of its two-tier arcaded Roman structure, though its original third story is lost, and one of four medieval towers added when the amphitheater was converted into a fortified quarter still stands. It is a state-owned monument managed with the city of Arles and forms part of the Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments World Heritage Site. The amphitheater remains in public use for events and is open to visitors on a ticketed basis.

About Roman Arena of Arles

Roman builders constructed the amphitheater at Arles around the end of the first century to host gladiatorial combat and public spectacles for the colony of Arelate. It served as the city's center of civic entertainment for centuries. During the medieval period the arena was fortified with towers and used as a walled refuge for townspeople.
