HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Roman Agora & Tower of the Winds.
The site preserves the Roman Agora's colonnaded courtyard and Gate of Athena Archegetis, along with the well-preserved octagonal Tower of the Winds with its carved wind-personification friezes, though many surrounding structures survive only as foundations. It is managed by Greece's Ministry of Culture through the local Ephorate of Antiquities. The archaeological site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Roman Agora & Tower of the Winds
Julius Caesar and Augustus funded the Roman Agora in Athens in the first century BCE as a new marketplace beside the older Greek Agora. Within it stood the octagonal Tower of the Winds, built by the astronomer Andronicus of Cyrrhus to house a water clock and wind vane. Together they served commerce, timekeeping, and civic life under Roman rule.
