HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rock of Dunamase.
The Rock of Dunamase preserves the ruined remains of an Anglo-Norman castle, including fragments of the gatehouse, keep, and enclosing walls, built atop an earlier early medieval stronghold on the same limestone outcrop, and the surviving masonry stands as an unroofed ruin rather than a restored structure. It is a national monument in the guardianship of the Office of Public Works. The site stands in open ground and is freely accessible to visitors at any time.
About Rock of Dunamase
The Rock of Dunamase was the site of an early medieval Irish stronghold, recorded as plundered by Viking raiders in the ninth century. Anglo-Norman lords later built a stone castle on the outcrop in the thirteenth century, incorporating it into the lordship of Leinster. The site served as an Irish fortress and later as a Norman stronghold controlling the countryside.
