The ruins preserve substantial standing masonry of the transepts and choir along with the lower walls and foundations of the nave, cloister, and monastic buildings of the former Cistercian abbey, set within later landscaped grounds. The site is in the guardianship of English Heritage as a scheduled monument. It lies in open ground and is accessible to visitors.
About Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire
Cistercian monks founded Roche Abbey in South Yorkshire in 1147, building it in the order's austere style. The monastery supported itself largely through sheep farming and wool production, a mainstay of the medieval English economy. Henry VIII's commissioners suppressed the abbey in 1538, ending nearly four centuries of monastic life there.
