HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rocca Demaniale.

The castle survives substantially intact, with its double curtain walls, corner towers, keep, and courtyard buildings, including furnished rooms and a small chapel traditionally associated with the Malatesta family who once held the fortress. It is owned by the Italian state and administered as a museum. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Rocca Demaniale

Local lords began building the castle at Gradara in the twelfth century, and the Malatesta family of Rimini later expanded it into a formidable border fortress between the Marche and Romagna. The castle became associated with the tragic legend of Paolo and Francesca, immortalized by Dante in the Divine Comedy. It served as a key Malatesta stronghold.
