In 1778, during the Revolution, the Township of West Amwell had the colonial road used by the Grand Continental Army under the command of General George Washington enroute to the battle at Monmouth, NJ. This section of the Bungtown Road is in its original untouched condition.
About Road to Monmouth Marker
Washington’s Continental Army used this colonial road in June 1778 while pursuing the British across New Jersey. The march culminated in the Battle of Monmouth on June 28. This surviving road segment preserves part of the route taken by soldiers moving toward one of the war’s largest northern engagements.
