HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire.
Extensive ruins survive of the Cistercian abbey, including the roofless nave arcades, the presbytery, the transepts, and remains of the chapter house, infirmary, and refectory, all standing as original medieval stonework left unroofed rather than reconstructed. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled ancient monument. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with the ruins set in open parkland along the River Rye.
About Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire
Cistercian monks from Clairvaux founded Rievaulx Abbey in 1132 under the patronage of Walter Espec, one of the earliest Cistercian houses in England. Under Abbot Aelred in the mid-twelfth century it became a major center of monastic learning and a prosperous sheep-farming estate. The abbey was dissolved in 1538 during Henry VIII's suppression of the monasteries.
