HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Richborough Roman Fort, Kent.

Richborough preserves the massive flint and mortar walls of the late Roman Saxon Shore fort, along with the earthwork remains of the earlier fortress and the foundations of the triumphal arch and amphitheater nearby, though much of the site survives only as buried or excavated foundations. It is a scheduled monument in the care of English Heritage. The site is open to visitors on a ticketed basis, with a small museum displaying finds from excavations.

About Richborough Roman Fort, Kent

The Roman army landed near this site in 43 CE at the start of its conquest of Britain, and the fort, known as Rutupiae, grew into a major port. A triumphal arch once commemorated the conquest there. By the late third century, the Romans refortified the site as one of the Saxon Shore forts defending Britain's coast.
