VISITOR INFORMATION
The Savannah waterfront provides interpretation separate from the river action. Period maps are still needed to verify the historic channels and vessel positions. Map point reviewed October 3, 2026: Pin represents the Savannah in the American Revolution waterfront panel, which includes the Battle of the Rice Boats. It is a visitor reference on East River Street, not a verified vessel mooring or river battle position. Visitor information reviewed October 3, 2026: Outdoor historical interpretation qualifies as Exhibits. Historic channels and boat moorings remain unresolved; dedicated on-site parking and toilets serving this panel remain unverified; nearby public parking and visitor-center toilets are described below. Parking researched October 3, 2026: Nearby paid Bryan Street Garage serves a walk to the River Street historical panel. Follow pedestrian ramps and crossings; parking does not locate the historic battle channels.
Visitor information final pass — reviewed October 3, 2026: Nearby public restrooms, including an accessible option, are documented at the River Street Visitor Information Center, 1 West River Street. The current visitor-center guide lists daily 10 am–6 pm opening with holiday/weather exceptions. Use the public waterfront approach; these are off-site visitor-center facilities, not toilets at the interpretation panel or access to historic boat positions.
The outdoor historical marker has no separate admission ticket or staffed hours. Follow any posted hours or access rules for the surrounding park or property.
Peak visitation season unconfirmed. No reliable site-specific monthly attendance pattern was established.
March-April or October-November for a public riverfront historical-context walk. Confirm any separately operated museum, island access or boat service before booking.

About Rice Boats Battle Site at Hutchinson Island
The Rice Boats battle involved British efforts to obtain supplies from vessels near Savannah in March 1776. Hutchinson Island and the Savannah River's channels shaped the encounter. The episode connected food, shipping, and imperial authority during the transition from colonial government to open war.
A 2009 photo records Savannah's riverfront Revolution panel interpreting the Rice Boats battle. A second photo, submitted in July 2024, shows extensive fading and surface loss. The display is separate from unverified Hutchinson Island moorings and battlefield deposits. Current repair status, panel care and the battle-site location need review.
History happened here at Rice Boats Battle Site at Hutchinson Island
British vessels entered the northern river channel beyond Hutchinson Island in early March 1776. Forces landed on the island as the operation sought rice and other provisions. Patriot resistance led to fighting around the vessels and river approaches during the following action.
Governor James Wright had already escaped Patriot custody and reached the British fleet. The encounter therefore unfolded amid the collapse of royal authority ashore. Savannah's modern waterfront can introduce the episode, but the landing places, channels, and boat positions need their own historical reconstruction.
