HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ribeira Sacra Monasteries.

The monasteries along the Ribeira Sacra canyons preserve Romanesque churches and cloisters, including those of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil and San Pedro de Rocas, some converted to other uses and others retaining a small religious community. They are held by a mix of the regional government of Galicia, the Catholic Church, and private operators, including one adapted as a hotel. Access varies by site, with some churches freely open and others accessible only by guided or ticketed visit.

About Ribeira Sacra Monasteries

The Ribeira Sacra grew from hermitages founded by monks in the deep river canyons of Galicia in the early medieval centuries. Benedictine and other monastic communities later built stone monasteries there, cultivating vineyards on the steep terraced slopes. The area became a major center of medieval Christian monasticism in northwestern Spain before many houses declined.
