HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ribat of Monastir.

The fortified ribat survives substantially as built, including its enclosing walls, corner towers, courtyard, and the tall Nador watchtower added in a later phase, making it one of the best preserved structures of its kind in North Africa. It is managed by Tunisia's Institut National du Patrimoine. The monument is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Ribat of Monastir

The Ribat of Monastir was built in the late eighth century as a fortified Islamic structure combining a garrison with a place of prayer. Warrior-monks stationed there helped defend the Tunisian coast against seaborne raids, as part of a chain of similar coastal forts. It later grew through successive additions and remained a center of religious and military life on the coast.
