HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rethymno Old Town & Fortezza.

The Fortezza retains its Venetian-built star-shaped ramparts, gates, and the domed former mosque within its walls, alongside the old town's narrow streets, Venetian and Ottoman era houses, fountains, and a minaret. The fortress is under the care of Greece's Ministry of Culture, while the old town's buildings remain largely in private and municipal ownership. The Fortezza is open to the public on a ticketed basis, and the old town is freely accessible.

About Rethymno Old Town & Fortezza

The Fortezza was built by the Venetians in the late sixteenth century atop the ancient acropolis of Rethymno to defend the town against Ottoman raids. Its surrounding old town developed as a Venetian-era port with Renaissance and later Ottoman architecture. The fortress and town reflect centuries of Venetian, then Ottoman, rule over Crete.
