The crypt of St. Wystan's church preserves its original Anglo-Saxon stonework and columns, while the adjacent site has yielded archaeological traces of a Viking winter camp rather than standing Viking-era structures. The church remains an active Church of England parish. The crypt and church are open to visitors, generally freely accessible with donations welcomed.
About Repton Crypt & Viking Camp, Derbyshire
The crypt at Repton was built in the eighth century as a burial chamber for the kings of Mercia, later becoming a shrine to the murdered prince Wystan. In 873 to 874 the Great Viking Army wintered at Repton, throwing up a D-shaped earthwork camp that incorporated the church. The site linked Mercian royal power with the Viking conquest.
