The palace retains its original eighteenth-century Bourbon era structure, including its main facade, courtyards, and grounds, though much of its original royal decor was dispersed after the fall of the monarchy. It is owned by the Italian state and used chiefly by the University of Naples Federico II, which occupies much of the building for academic purposes. Portions of the palace and its botanical garden are open to the public, while other areas remain restricted to university use.
About Reggia di Portici
The Reggia di Portici was built beginning in 1738 as a summer residence for Charles of Bourbon, king of Naples, near the buried site of Herculaneum. Materials and antiquities unearthed during its construction and nearby excavations were gathered into a royal museum housed within the palace. The site became linked to the early discovery and study of Herculaneum and Pompeii.
