HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Regent Historic Village.
Regent village preserves its stone church and a scatter of early nineteenth century stone cottages built for freed Africans resettled by the Sierra Leone Company, along with the surrounding hillside village layout. It falls under the general heritage oversight of Sierra Leone's Monuments and Relics Commission. The village is inhabited and freely accessible to visitors.
About Regent Historic Village
Regent village was established around 1816 under British colonial Sierra Leone as a settlement for Africans freed from slave ships by the Royal Navy's anti-slavery patrols. It grew under Governor Charles MacCarthy's village system, and its settlers built a stone church for the community. It formed part of a network of recaptive villages central to Freetown's founding purpose.
