Real Mary King's Close preserves a network of surviving seventeenth century close and tenement structures below later buildings on the Royal Mile, including original stone walls, closes, and room layouts, largely intact rather than reconstructed. It is operated as a visitor attraction under private management. Access is only by guided tour on a ticketed basis.
About Real Mary King's Close
Mary King's Close was a narrow street in Edinburgh's Old Town, built up with tenement housing from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that housed merchants, tradespeople, and residents through plague outbreaks. In the 1750s, its lower levels were partially built over during construction of the Royal Exchange. It preserved a cross-section of early modern urban life.
