The town preserves a substantial stock of colonial and nineteenth century mining architecture, including hacienda buildings and residences reflecting the Cornish community that settled there, set along its steep, narrow streets. It is designated a Pueblo Mágico and falls under municipal administration. The town is freely accessible as a living community with no admission required to walk its streets.
About Real del Monte (Mineral del Monte)
Real del Monte grew around silver mines worked since the colonial era, becoming one of central Mexico's most productive mining districts under Spanish rule in the eighteenth century. The Conde de Regla developed the mines and introduced new drainage and extraction methods there. The town's silver wealth helped fund major religious and civic construction.
