The site preserves substantial ruined flint and stone walls of the Norman abbey church and claustral buildings, along with earthworks associated with the seventeenth-century Civil War siege, rather than any complete standing structure. It is owned by Reading Borough Council as a scheduled monument. The ruins stand in open ground within a public park and are freely accessible.

King Henry I founded Reading Abbey in 1121 as a major Benedictine monastery and royal mausoleum, later dissolved under Henry VIII in 1539. During the English Civil War, Royalist forces fortified the town, and Parliamentary troops besieged and captured Reading in 1643. The abbey ranked among medieval England's wealthiest religious houses.
