HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Raqchi (Temple of Wiracocha).
The site preserves the massive central wall of the Temple of Wiracocha, built in part of stone and part of adobe on stone foundations, along with surrounding rows of circular storage buildings and a residential sector, with the wall's upper adobe portions consolidated rather than fully original. It is administered by Peru's Ministry of Culture as a protected archaeological site. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Raqchi (Temple of Wiracocha)
Built under the Inca Empire in the fifteenth century, the temple complex at Raqchi was dedicated to Viracocha, the Inca creator god, and included the largest known roofed structure in Inca architecture. It stood along the royal road system and incorporated storehouses and lodging for pilgrims and travelers. Raqchi served as a major religious center of the Inca state.
