HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ramiers (Fort Ramiers).

Fort Ramiers preserves ruined stone fortification walls and structures on a hilltop site associated with Haiti's early nineteenth century defenses, surviving in a ruinous and largely unrestored state. It falls under Haiti's national heritage authority, the Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National. Access is limited and generally requires a guided approach given the site's remote hilltop location.

About Ramiers (Fort Ramiers)

King Henri Christophe ordered the construction of Fort Ramiers in the early nineteenth century as part of a chain of fortifications defending northern Haiti after independence from France. It worked together with the nearby Citadelle Laferrière to guard mountain approaches against a feared French reinvasion. The fort formed part of a system built to secure Haiti's sovereignty.
