About Raft Swamp Battle Site

Raft Swamp was the scene of a Patriot victory over Loyalist forces in October 1781. Griffith Rutherford's militia pursued opponents through the Robeson County landscape, where damaged crossings and swamp terrain shaped the encounter. The battle belongs to the Revolution's continuing conflict in North Carolina.

North Carolina's roadside historical marker provides an interpretive reference rather than the battlefield itself. The original crossing routes and swamp fighting ground still require map comparison, and no surviving military structure or public battlefield entrance was verified.

History happened here at Raft Swamp Battle Site

On October 15, 1781, Rutherford's force confronted Loyalists associated with Hector McNeill, Duncan Ray, and Archibald McDougald. The retreating force used damaged bridges and causeways to hinder pursuit. Patriot troops nevertheless pressed through the difficult terrain until their opponents dispersed.

Raft Swamp illustrates how local military struggle continued during the same month as Yorktown. Its geography was defined by routes across wet ground rather than a single enclosed position. The marker preserves the event's identity, while locating the crossings and pursuit requires further historical landscape work.
