The site preserves the Quebrada de Humahuaca cultural landscape itself, a long Andean valley containing pre-Columbian terracing, stone-built pukaras, colonial adobe churches and chapels, and traditional adobe villages rather than a single monument. It lies mostly on land held by local communities and municipalities, with the valley protected as a World Heritage cultural landscape under Argentine national heritage law. Access is generally free and open, following the national highway and local roads through the towns and archaeological sites along the valley floor.
About Quebrada de Humahuaca
The Quebrada de Humahuaca is an Andean valley in Jujuy Province that served for thousands of years as a trade route linking the highlands with the lowlands. Successive pre-Columbian cultures settled the valley before it became part of the Inca road network. After Spanish colonization, it remained a corridor for trade and travel between the Andes and lowland regions.
