HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Pyramids of Meroë.
The site preserves roughly two hundred steep-sided pyramids of the Kushite royal necropolis, many with their upper sections deliberately destroyed by nineteenth century treasure hunting, alongside the ruins of associated temples and chapels. It is a World Heritage Site under the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums. The pyramids stand in open desert and are generally accessible to visitors.
About Pyramids of Meroë
Rulers and queens of the Kingdom of Kush built these pyramids near Meroë as royal tombs from around the third century BCE onward, after the kingdom's political center shifted south from Napata. The tombs held Kushite monarchs and the kandakes, its ruling queens, blending Egyptian and Nubian traditions. Meroë's wealth rested on ironworking and trade linking Africa to the Mediterranean.
