The pyramid survives essentially intact as built, faced in white marble over a concrete and brick core, standing beside the Aurelian Walls near the Porta San Paolo. It is managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture as a protected ancient monument. The exterior is freely visible from the surrounding streets, while the interior burial chamber is accessible only on limited guided visits.

The Pyramid of Cestius was built around 12 BCE as the tomb of Gaius Cestius, a Roman magistrate, reflecting the era's fashion for Egyptian styles following the conquest of Egypt. It was later incorporated into the Aurelian Walls in the third century CE as a defensive bastion. The monument illustrated Rome's fascination with Egypt after Augustus's annexation.
