HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis.
The site preserves the stone foundations of Punic era houses, streets, workshops, individual bathtubs, and a sanctuary attributed to the goddess Tanit, along with an adjoining necropolis of rock-cut tombs, all left unbuilt over since antiquity. It is administered by Tunisia's National Heritage Institute and is a World Heritage Site. The ruins are open to the public as a ticketed archaeological park.
About Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis
Kerkuane was founded by the Carthaginians on the Cap Bon peninsula, likely in the sixth century BCE, as a Punic town supported by fishing, salt production, and purple dye manufacture. Its houses and necropolis followed a regular urban plan typical of Punic settlements. The town was abandoned around 256 BCE during the First Punic War and never rebuilt.
