HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ptolemais.

Ptolemais preserves extensive unexcavated and partially excavated Greco-Roman ruins, including remains of a triumphal arch, cisterns, a theater, and villa mosaic fragments, standing largely as ruins in open ground with limited conservation intervention. It is managed by Libyan state antiquities authorities. Public access is generally unrestricted but limited in practice due to the site's remote location and minimal visitor infrastructure.

About Ptolemais

Ptolemais began as the harbor town of Barca before being renamed for the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt, which controlled Cyrenaica from the third century BCE. It grew into one of the five cities of the Cyrenaican Pentapolis and flourished under Roman rule, acquiring an aqueduct, theaters, and villas with mosaics. The city served as a major center of eastern Libya.
