HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Providence Island.

Little of the original eighteenth and nineteenth century settlement fabric survives on the small river island beyond commemorative markers and a cotton tree associated with the earliest settlers, the surrounding urban landscape having been substantially redeveloped. It is under the general oversight of Liberian government and municipal authorities rather than a dedicated heritage body. The island is in principle publicly accessible, though facilities and formal visitor arrangements are limited.

About Providence Island

Providence Island was the landing site in 1822 of the first settlers sent by the American Colonization Society to found a colony for freed African Americans on Africa's coast. The settlement they founded grew into Monrovia, named for President Monroe. The island became known as the founding site of Liberia, Africa's first republic led by settlers of African descent.
