William Franklin, New Jersey's last royal governor and Benjamin Franklin's son, occupied the Proprietary House from 1774 until Patriot authorities arrested him in 1776. His steadfast Loyalism produced a painful family and political rupture. Removed to Connecticut and later active in Loyalist organization, Franklin never reconciled with his father. The mansion embodies the collapse of royal government and the divided loyalties of independence.
