HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Procida Historic Centre (Terra Murata).

The fortified hilltop quarter preserves its dense pastel colored houses, narrow lanes, the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, and the former Palazzo d'Avalos, once used as a prison, though the palazzo's interior has been altered by that later use. The abbey and much of the quarter remain under church and municipal ownership. The streets are freely accessible and the abbey is open to visitors.

About Procida Historic Centre (Terra Murata)

Terra Murata, the historic citadel of Procida, developed from the eleventh century as a fortified hilltop settlement offering refuge from raids in the Bay of Naples. It grew around the Benedictine abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and later included a palace that served as a prison from the eighteenth century until 1988. The site anchored the island's defense.
