About Princeton to Morristown River Crossing Marker

Washington’s army crossed the river near here while marching from its victory at Princeton toward Morristown in January 1777. The crossing helped the Continentals escape the main British force and reach defensible winter quarters. The movement completed a campaign that revived American morale after months of defeat.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Princeton to Morristown River Crossing Marker

Washington's army used this crossing after defeating British troops at Princeton on January 3, 1777. The soldiers marched toward Morristown rather than remain vulnerable to Cornwallis's larger force, completing the operational movement of the Trenton-Princeton campaign. More than four years later, on August 30–31, 1781, American and French forces traveling from the New York region toward Yorktown passed through the same corridor. The marker therefore connects two decisive campaigns and demonstrates the enduring military value of New Jersey's bridges, ferries, and roads.

Route of Continental Army of Morristown after Battle of Princeton, Jan. 3, 1777. Route also of armies marching from New York to Yorktown, VA. Aug. 30-31, 1781.

The event took place within a landscape where roads, bridges, rivers, taverns, farms, workshops, and private houses performed public functions. Military and political leaders depended on printers, laborers, servants, enslaved people, sailors, teamsters, messengers, militia, and local families. Their contributions and losses are often compressed into a marker's brief wording. Examining the location restores the practical scale of movement, supply, communication, and coercion that shaped the Revolution and the early republic.

Although the original structures or terrain may have changed, the marker fixes the history to a specific point. It encourages visitors to compare concise commemoration with the fuller documentary record and to consider how later generations selected events for remembrance. The site's value lies not only in its association with a famous person or date, but also in the way local geography and community resources influenced decisions with consequences far beyond the immediate neighborhood. Seen in broader context, this place demonstrates how large historical outcomes emerged from local choices, routes, resources, conflicts, and acts of endurance. The surviving location gives those relationships a tangible human scale.
