Washington's army followed this general route north after the victory at Princeton on January 3, 1777. The rapid march toward Morristown concluded the Ten Crucial Days that began with the Delaware crossing and the attack on Trenton. Rather than remain exposed near Princeton, Washington moved toward terrain protected by the Watchung Mountains, where his exhausted soldiers could obtain shelter and threaten British communications.
