HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Princeton to Morristown Marker 4

Washington's exhausted army followed this general route after defeating British forces at Princeton on January 3, 1777. Moving to Morristown protected the Continentals from Cornwallis's superior numbers, secured defensible ground behind the Watchung Mountains, and threatened British posts across New Jersey. The march consolidated the achievements of the Trenton-Princeton campaign.

A historical marker identifies this portion of the Continental Army’s route. The original rural landscape is altered, and no temporary military structures survive.

The event depended on an eighteenth-century landscape of roads, ferries, waterways, taverns, farms, workshops, and private houses. Prominent commanders and politicians relied on soldiers, sailors, drivers, laborers, printers, servants, enslaved people, guides, and local families. These participants supplied food, transport, shelter, intelligence, and skilled work, while communities also endured requisition, property loss, displacement, disease, or violence. Recovering those practical systems gives greater meaning to the famous names and dates preserved by the marker.

The modern marker fixes this history to a particular location even where buildings, roads, fields, or shorelines have changed. Standing near the site makes distances, terrain, and routes easier to understand and encourages comparison between concise commemoration, local tradition, and documentary evidence. The place is significant because national events were made from choices and resources assembled at local points like this one. Its preservation keeps that relationship between landscape, memory, and historical consequence visible. In broader context, this episode shows how the Revolution and early republic grew from local movements, labor, conflict, and acts of endurance. The surviving point gives those relationships a tangible human scale.
