About Presidio County

Presidio County was created from Bexar County in 1850 and organized in 1875, taking its name from the Spanish word for a fortified garrison. Spanish presidios were established in the region to protect missions in the Big Bend area. Fort Davis served as the original county seat from 1875 before Marfa took over that role in 1885.
