HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Pre-Romanesque Churches of Oviedo.
The ensemble includes the largely intact palace hall of Santa María del Naranco and the church of San Miguel de Lillo, along with other early medieval Asturian churches, several of which retain original masonry, carved capitals, and lattice windows despite partial collapse and later rebuilding. The monuments form a World Heritage Site and are cared for by regional heritage authorities in Asturias. They are open to the public, generally on a ticketed or guided basis.
About Pre-Romanesque Churches of Oviedo
The pre-Romanesque churches of Oviedo were built under the kings of Asturias, the Christian kingdom that survived in northern Iberia after 711. Alfonso II and later Ramiro I raised churches such as San Julián de los Prados and Santa María del Naranco in the ninth century. They developed a distinct royal style asserting Asturian and Christian continuity.
