HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Portovenere.

The village preserves its medieval castle, the Gothic church of San Pietro on the rocky point, and its characteristic tall, colorful houses forming a defensive wall along the harbor. It forms part of the Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands World Heritage Site and falls under Italian heritage protection with municipal management. The village is freely accessible, with the castle and church open to visitors.

About Portovenere

Portovenere grew from a Roman-era harbor on the Ligurian coast, its name recalling an ancient temple to Venus said to have stood on the headland. The Republic of Genoa fortified the village in the twelfth century, adding a castle and defensive walls facing the sea. It served for centuries as a maritime outpost guarding the Gulf of La Spezia.
