The village preserves the ornamental Italianate buildings, campanile, piazza, and grottoes assembled by Clough Williams-Ellis over several decades, many incorporating salvaged architectural fragments rather than fabric original to the site itself. It remains privately owned by Portmeirion Limited, held for the benefit of the village's upkeep. The village is open to the public on a ticketed basis, including its shops, gardens, and hotel grounds.
About Portmeirion
Portmeirion was begun in 1925 by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who designed an Italianate village on the Welsh coast to show development could enhance a beautiful site. Construction continued in phases into the 1970s, combining reused architectural fragments with new buildings around a piazza. The village later became the filming location for the 1960s television series The Prisoner.
