HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Portara (Temple of Apollo).
A single massive marble gateway, more than six meters tall, survives as the sole standing remnant of the unfinished sixth century BCE temple, set on the islet of Palatia at the entrance to Naxos harbor. The site falls under the Greek Ministry of Culture as a protected archaeological monument. It stands in open ground and is freely accessible to visitors at all times.
About Portara (Temple of Apollo)
Naxian rulers began building a marble temple to Apollo on the islet facing Naxos harbor in the sixth century BCE, intending it as a grand sanctuary for the sun god. Construction stopped before the temple was completed, leaving only its massive doorway, the Portara, standing. The unfinished gate later served as a landmark for sailors.
