HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Porta Maggiore.

The gate survives as an original ancient Roman structure of travertine, built as a monumental arch carrying two aqueducts over the Via Praenestina and Via Labicana, with the nearby tomb of the baker Eurysaces still standing beside it. It stands in the care of the Italian state through the Ministry of Culture and the municipal authorities of Rome. The gate and the surrounding archaeological area are freely accessible in an open urban setting.

About Porta Maggiore

Emperor Claudius built this monumental gate in Rome around the year 52, combining the Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus aqueducts into an arched crossing over two ancient roads. Its facade displays rusticated stonework unusual for Roman public architecture. The Emperor Aurelian later incorporated the structure into the defensive walls built around the city.
