HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Port Royal.
The town preserves Fort Charles and a scattering of colonial-era buildings along with St. Peter's Church, while the bulk of the seventeenth-century settlement lies submerged offshore as a drowned archaeological site following the 1692 earthquake. It is designated a heritage site under the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The surviving structures on land are open to the public, while the submerged remains are accessible only to permitted researchers and divers.
About Port Royal
Port Royal was founded by English colonists in the mid-seventeenth century at the entrance to Kingston Harbour and grew into one of the Caribbean's wealthiest ports. It served as a base for privateers and pirates, including Henry Morgan, operating under English commissions against Spanish shipping. An earthquake in 1692 destroyed the town, ending its era as a major port.
