The Pont du Gard was built in the first century CE as part of a Roman aqueduct carrying water nearly fifty kilometers to the city of Nemausus, modern Nîmes. Its three tiers of stone arches carried the channel across the Gardon river valley, reflecting precise Roman surveying and engineering. The bridge exemplified Roman infrastructure built to supply a provincial city.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Pont du Gard
The Pont du Gard carried the Roman aqueduct of Nemausus, modern Nîmes, across the deep valley of the Gardon. Built in the first century CE, probably around the middle decades, the aqueduct extended nearly fifty kilometers from springs near Uzès. Its winding route followed a remarkably slight overall gradient, using channels, tunnels, small bridges, and settling basins to deliver water by gravity. The three-tier bridge solved the system’s most dramatic obstacle and made precise surveying, quarrying, transport, lifting, and coordinated labor visible on a monumental scale.
Six great arches form the lowest tier, eleven the middle, and thirty-five smaller arches originally carried the covered water channel above. Builders fitted locally quarried limestone blocks largely without mortar in the principal structure, leaving projecting stones that supported scaffolding and handling. At almost fifty meters high, the bridge balanced mass with repeated open arches that reduced weight and water pressure. The channel supplied fountains, baths, houses, workshops, and public amenities in Nîmes, though distribution reflected status and did not give every resident equal access.
Mineral deposits inside the conduit record centuries of water flow and maintenance. The aqueduct probably declined from the fourth century as administration and urban systems changed, eventually ceasing to carry a reliable supply. The bridge survived because it also offered a crossing over the Gardon. Medieval users narrowed or altered parts of the lower level, and local authorities levied tolls. From 1743 to 1747 engineers built a separate road bridge alongside the lowest tier, relieving pressure on the ancient arches while permanently changing the monument’s profile.
Scholars, architects, artists, and travelers increasingly celebrated the Pont du Gard as evidence of Roman engineering. Repairs occurred under successive French governments, including major nineteenth-century work associated with engineer Charles Laisné. Conservation stabilized masonry and removed some harmful alterations, but floods, vegetation, weather, and mass visitation remained threats. Archaeological study of the entire aqueduct shifted attention from the spectacular bridge alone to the catchment, gradients, maintenance shafts, deposits, and urban distribution that allowed the water system to function.
The bridge became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and now anchors a managed cultural landscape with museum interpretation, paths, and controlled facilities. Its ancient stonework is substantially preserved, while the adjacent eighteenth-century crossing and modern visitor infrastructure document later uses. The Pont du Gard is not simply a triumphal object: it was one element in a long service network dependent on constant cleaning and repair. Its survival joins Roman hydraulics, medieval mobility, Enlightenment engineering, national conservation, and contemporary efforts to protect a globally recognized site.
