VISITOR INFORMATION
The 1778 defensive perimeter still needs independent mapping. Reconcile the October 18 capitulation with the Event’s October 19 end date; opening date also needs independent verification. Map point reviewed October 3, 2026: Aayi Mandapam (Park Monument) in Bharathi Park is assigned as a nearby heritage-monument reference. Puducherry PWD identifies the park as the former French star-fort site, demolished in 1761; INTACH identifies the later Ayi Mandapam at its centre. The point is the centre of the mapped monument geometry, corroborated by a geotagged own-work photograph, rather than a general park or city centre. The nineteenth-century water monument does not mark the 1778 defensive perimeter or William Stevens memorial. Visitor information reviewed October 3, 2026: MONUMENT identifies Aayi Mandapam, the nearby visitor reference. Gardens describe the surrounding Bharathi Park grounds. Current parking and restrooms remain unverified. These tags do not establish surviving 1778 fortifications.
Visitor amenities reviewed October 3, 2026: No confirmed information was found for visitor parking and public restrooms. The NO entries reflect unverified provision, rather than confirmed absence. Check locally before relying on facilities.
No separate admission ticket or staffed monument hours are listed for Aayi Mandapam. Follow Bharathi Park’s posted opening and local access rules; a current park timetable or admission charge was not confirmed. The monument is a nearby reference, not surviving 1778 fortifications.
Peak visitation season unconfirmed. No reliable site-specific monthly attendance pattern was established.
January-February for generally less rainy, less intensely hot heritage walks in Puducherry. Confirm a guided interpretation of the former siege and fortification area, using currently permitted public streets and park paths.

About Pondicherry Siege Fortifications Site (1778)
Pondicherry was a French stronghold on India's southeastern coast when British troops under Hector Munro besieged it in 1778. The historic town supplies the setting for a campaign that brought the American Revolutionary War's Anglo-French conflict into the Indian Ocean.
The park occupies an earlier French fort site, but that fort was demolished in 1761. The nineteenth-century monument does not identify the 1778 siege perimeter, whose surviving traces still require investigation.
History happened here at Pondicherry Siege Fortifications Site (1778)
France's entry into the war against Britain exposed its overseas settlements to attack. At Pondicherry, Governor Guillaume de Bellecombe prepared the defenses and resisted Munro's demand for surrender in August 1778. British operations gradually placed the French settlement under sustained pressure.
The siege ended with French capitulation in October. Pondicherry's official gazetteer gives October 18, while the linked event record ends on October 19. The episode connects the town's colonial landscape to the wider struggle over European power, trade, and fortified coastal bases.
