HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Pompey's Pillar.
The site preserves a single freestanding red granite Roman column, erected for a Roman emperor rather than for Pompey, along with sphinxes, underground galleries, and ruins of the Serapeum temple complex that once surrounded it. It is administered by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Pompey's Pillar
Despite its name, this column honors not Pompey but the Roman emperor Diocletian, erected around 297 CE, likely to mark his suppression of an Alexandrian revolt. Carved from a single block of red Aswan granite, it stood within the precinct of the Serapeum, the great temple of the god Serapis. The name arose from a later, medieval misattribution.
